Why does my cat vomit after eating?
Cats vomit for a lot of reasons. It could be a case of hairballs, something they ate or a medical condition. But if your pet vomits right after they eat their meal then this can get quite worrisome unless you think of a way to stop the problem.
One of the main reason for your pet to vomit just after they consume their meal can be regurgitation. This means your pet tries to bring out swallowed food through their mouth. This usually happens when they love the taste of the new food or try to eat fast while trying to compete with other pets at home.
A cat that eats fast usually swallows the food without chewing and in the process, ingests a lot of air. The large pieces of food and air in the stomach will have to come out. If your pet vomits the set of kibbles they have eaten in the next instant itself you know that it is because of regurgitation.
If you feel that your pet eats too fast and is regurgitating, follow these steps:
- Serve them smaller portions of meals in frequent intervals until you notice them slowing down their eating speed.
- Instead of a regular deep dish, place the food in a flat surface like a cookie sheet or a flat bowl. This ensures that the kibbles are spread widely and that your pet takes their own time to finish the bowl. They will learn not take mouthfuls of food.
Introducing your cat to a new food and for them to transition to the new diet can cause them to vomit. So, you need to mix their old food with the new food and gradually over a week’s time need to slowly reduce the portion of the old food until they successfully switch over to the new food.
If your pet still shows signs of discomfort apart from vomiting continuously then you must have them professionally checked by the vet. It is also a good idea to take your vet’s advice before introducing them to a new food.
