How to eliminate the smell of cat pee
When your cat has toilet accidents at home, the smell of it can get quite overpowering
and equally difficult to get rid off! Whether they choose to urinate on your expensive
carpet, bed or a good piece of furniture what is important is that you remove the odor
effectively for them not to repeatedly dirty the same spot. Cats will return to the same
spot if you do not eliminate the odor.
Why does cat’s urine stink?
A cat’s urine is no different from that of any other animal. But what makes it unbearable
is that we tend to notice its presence after it gets stale and the smell becomes more
profound. That is because the bacterium in the urine decomposes and spreads the
smell of ammonia which gives it a rather strong smell.
If you have an older cat, chances are their kidneys are not working smoothly and in
consequence will give out stronger and fouler smelling urine.
Apart from the bad smell, a cat’s urine also gives out hormones that signal their sexual
availability to the opposite sex.
Products that help to clean cat urine
The first thing you need to do is to clean the area faster before the urine dries up as the
odor gets harder to remove once it gets dry. So, a common mistake that cat owners
frequently make is to not clean the area soon enough.
You can clean the area by using common household products like vinegar, baking soda
or enzymatic cleaners. Vinegar works well as it is strong smelling and will remove the
odor of cat urine as it is an acid which neutralizes the alkalized salts in the stains of a
dried cat urine. So, you can try mixing one part of vinegar with one part of water to clean
the stains.
Enzyme based cleaners found in pet stores will also help you in eliminating the odor as
the enzymes found in the product easily breaks down the acid in the cat urine and also
helps to get rid of the strong smell.
To effectively clean a surface previously made dirty by your cat it is necessary that not
only you but your cat does not get the smell of the previous odor for them to urinate on
the same spot. So, avoid using any cleaning products that contain ammonia as once
they get the whiff of it they will easily go to the same spot and urinate. Plus, ammonia
will mark the stain instead of helping you get rid of it!
Hygiene is vital for a healthy body and a happier home! So, always remember to clean
the area as soon as it gets dirty and if you notice that your pet is urinating frequently
and if they find it painful the best thing for you to do is to get them checked by your vet.
