Why do cats lick you?
Cat parents know how it feels to be licked by a cat. Since they have a tongue that feels like sandpaper it is like being slowly exfoliated! You may feel that your feline pal is showing their love and affection. While this may be true there are other reasons for them to lick you:
- Your cat is making you a part of their family by licking you. They may recollect their mother doing the same for them when they were little. So, they are trying to the same. They are trying to nurture you and claim you as their own.
- By marking you with their scent they warn others that you are their property! They may have seen their mothers do the same with them and are doing the same with you. Licking establishes a bond between the two of you.
- Cats who have been weaned early develop oral fixation that lead to excessive licking. So, their need to suckle has no outlet and licking provides them some comfort and soothes them.
- Cats like to return the love and affection you give them by petting you. The best way for them to express the feeling is by licking.
- Cats lick compulsively when they feel anxious. So, it is a good idea to calm them down by patting and cuddling. Give them more attention and soothe your feline friend till they settle.
- Never push your pet away or punish them for expressing what the feel in a natural way. Try to distract their attention by giving them different toys and treats to play with.
