Is my cat sleeping too much?
We all know that cats are famous for their little naps they take every now and then. Yes, cats can sleep upto 12 to 16 hours a day! If you are worried that your senior buddy is getting too much or too little sleep than what is normal, here are a couple of things for you to consider:
- It is normal for senior cats to sleep upto 20 hours, just like they did when they were kittens.
- If you notice that your cat is getting less sleep and is awake all the time it could indicate a medical problem. Your feline pal maybe having an overproduction of thyroid hormone leading to hyperthyroidism. So, you need to get them checked by the vet for effective treatment.
- On the other hand, if your pet is oversleeping this could also indicate a health issue. They maybe suffering from arthritis and would try to hide this problem by sleeping and resting frequently. So, you need to get your pet checked by the vet.
- If you notice your senior pet pacing aimlessly, forgetting to use the litterbox, changes in their sleep patterns or unable to adjust to new situations, they could be suffering from cognitive dysfunction. So, get your pet checked by the vet for effective treatment.
Apart from getting your pet checked for medical conditions you can also help your feline friend get good rest and improve their sleeping habits by following these tips:
- Do not try to make any changes in their daily routine as this would cause your senior cat anxiety leading to stress and they may not sleep at nights.
- Ensure your feline friend is in a room that has dark curtains to put them in a sleeping mode. Make sure they have a comfortable bed and a warm blanket to snooze on.
- Exercise your pet daily to improve their muscle tone which help them to sleep more comfortably.
- Make sure you keep their food and water bowls, litter box and toys within their reach.
As a dutiful pet parent you need to monitor their sleep and look after your pet’s overall health by taking them to the vet. Give them loving care and companionship to make this stage of life beautiful.
Happy parenting!
