Signs of aging in your elderly cat
As your feline companion enters his golden period, a lot of changes happen within him and you as a pet parent must understand and make some adjustments in order to make his later years comfortable and loving. This a time for gentle care and spending quiet times at home with your furry buddy.
The following are the the changes your pet goes through as he ages:
- His activity levels decrease and has reduced muscle tone.
- Changes in appetite and fluid intake.
- His vision and hearing ability may not be as sound as before.
- Weaker immune system.
- Changes in bowel and urinary system functioning.
- Changes in sleep patterns, as shorter naps increases and deep sleep decreases.
- Coat condition deteriorates.
- Your pet may develop arthritis, diabetes, hyperthyroidism or kidney disease.
- Psychological changes such as senility, aggression, overt dependence and excessive crying can occur.
It is recommended that your share any concerns that you have about your pet with your veterinarian. Many people do not discuss their pet’s problem as they fear that the vet will advise to have their pet euthanized. This is however not true, as your vet is there to help your pet and will always find a solution to his problem. It is necessary at this stage to schedule regular vet visits to ensure that your pet is not suffering from any pain or serious illness and that he enjoys this golden period comfortably with you.
Happy parenting!
