Signs of cognitive dysfunction in older cats
Once your feline pal steps into old age there will be a decline in the functioning of his brain. One of the causes of this would be an increase in the breakdown of neurotransmitters and increased damage of free radicals in the brain.
The symptoms of cognitive dysfunction are:
- Disorientation.
- Changes in the way your pet interacts with you or with other pets.
- Changes in sleep patterns.
- Vocalisation.
- Memory loss.
- Problems using the litterbox and having more ‘accidents’ at home.
- Restlessness or wandering.
- Changes in his activity levels.
If you have noticed the above symptoms in your pet then you have to take him to the vet to discuss his treatment and behavioural changes.
Mental stimulation and stress relief measures can improve your pet’s mental ability. Physical activities such as walking, time spent outdoors in a safe area or seating him in front of a window can stimulate his mind. You can also teach your old cat new tricks and doing this will help to keep their mind and body active.
