Anaemia in dogs
The deficiency of red blood cells (RBC) or haemoglobin (Hb) in the blood is termed as anaemia. It can happen due to internal or external bleeding caused by conditions such as an immune-mediated disorder or other infectious diseases.
The haemoglobin delivers oxygen to the cells and tissues of the body. It poses a problem when the number of red blood cells reduces because of decreased production or increased loss.
All breeds of dog, males and females can suffer from anaemia. An anaemic patient will suffer from symptoms related to lack of oxygen. Small puppies are at a higher risk of developing anaemia due to parasitic infestations. Iron or copper deficiency also causes anaemia. A shortage of vitamin B-complex may also lead to anaemia.
The following are the symptoms of Anaemia:
- Weakness or Tiredness
- Lack of appetite
- Lethargy
- Pale mucous membrane or Pale gums
- Fast breathing and Fast heart rate in case of severe anemia.
If your pet is showing the above symptoms you need to take them to the vet immediately for quicker medical intervention and treatment.
Since prevention is always better than cure, you need to ensure that you reduce the risk of infectious diseases and injuries or trauma by constantly monitoring your dog. You also need to feed them high quality balanced diet so that they have their fill of essential vitamins and minerals. Regular vaccination and parasite prevention is also highly recommended.
Happy parenting!
