Regurgitation in dogs
Does your dog eat food only to throw up the next instant? If they do, then it is a case of regurgitation. This is a process which makes the food in your dog’s stomach move backwards from the stomach to the esophageal tract and then out through the mouth.
This condition is inherited or occurs as a result of various causes. It can be due to foreign objects swallowed, eating too fast or certain medical conditions. Regurgitation in dogs can be easily treated by making certain changes in your pet’s diet along with a course of medicines.
The symptoms of regurgitation include:
- Fever
- Lethargy
- Running nose
- Weight loss
- Coughing
- Vomiting
- Swallowing difficulties
- Bad breath
- Always hungry
- Swelling in the neck
Certain breeds are more prone to develop regurgitation. This includes the Miniature Schnauzer, Great Dane, German Shepherd, Irish Setter, Labrador and Newfoundland. Certain medical conditions can also cause regurgitation in dogs. Problems in the throat that is present right from birth, congenital problems with the esophageal tract, foreign bodies in the throat, cancer, rabies and an esophageal disease can cause regurgitation.
Once you take your pet to the vet after observing the above symptoms, they will analyse if the vomiting is due to regurgitation and will thoroughly examine your dog’s throat. Diet management and a prescription of medicines will help to treat the problem.
