How to socialize your puppy
When your puppy is 2 to 4 months of age they are at at a very sensitive stage as they try to learn what is normal around them. Most dogs are born social while the rest need to work at it. If your four legged buddy has not been taught to socialize at an early age then it will lead to unhealthy behaviors like barking, growling and retreating. Therefore, engaging your dog in social activities is a must to promote a healthy and a happy dog not to mention the fact that it does wonders for your social life!
Here are simple ways to make your canine buddy be social:
- Take your puppy everywhere with you; on long drives, to the gas station, grocery store and to the vet’s for a friendly visit. Let him get used to the normal sights and sounds around him.
- Gradually expose him to different kinds of people from children and adults to old people. Having frequent house parties is a good idea to introduce him to various people. You can ask your guests to pat him gently and feed him his favourite treats for showing good behaviour.
- Introduce your puppy to other animals like the friendly cat or the cows in your neighbourhood and the birds that he can easily spot in the nearby trees.
- Once your puppy is done with vaccinations you can take them to parks and walk them on the streets and introduce them to the city sounds and sights so that everything appears natural to them. Take them to your friend’s or relative’s place to get him used to being with different people and away from his comfort zone.
You can always contact your vet to get his professional advice on the best ways to make your pup more social.
