Your pup’s first bath
Puppies are as unpredictable and messy as babies. If let unattended they get dirt all over themselves, get newspapers and sticky poop stuck on them. Usually the mother dog takes care of canine hygiene by licking her puppies clean. In case your puppy is separated from its mother then it is your responsibility to groom her. You can do so by cleaning her with a moist washcloth or a wipe.
Once your pup is over 2 months you can give her a proper bath. Here are a few pointers on how to give your pup its first bath. You can bathe them in the bathroom or in your backyard. Just make sure you do not give them bath on a slippery surface.
- Brush your pup well before bath as it gets rid of tangles after bath. It also helps in removing dirt and excess hair.
- Make the bathwater ready. It has to be lukewarm. You do not want her shivering from cold or be burned by hot water. So make sure water is at the right temperature for them to enjoy bathtime.
- Select the shampoo or soap that is best suited to the breed of your puppy. It is advisable to buy the kind recommended by your vet. When you are applying the soap or shampoo avoid areas near their mouth, eyes and ears. Use warm water to rinse your puppy thoroughly making sure the water flow is gentle.
- Use a clean towel and wipe your pup clean.
- If it is sunny outside leave them out to dry naturally. If the weather is cold then you can blow dry them.
If you want your pup to enjoy her bath time you need to make them feel comfortable and make it is an enjoyable experience.
