How to survive the first night with your puppy?

Separating your pup from its family is quite heart-breaking for them. They will miss the warmth and comfort of their mother and their newly formed bond with their siblings.  When you bring them home you are no doubt excited about your newest member but your pet will still be missing its family and grieving for them!

Separation discomfort is quite normal for a young pup before it gets accustomed to its new home and family. You just need to be more patient. Think of it as a trait inherited before dogs became domestic. A pup that has been separated from its mother in the wild is always at the risk of being attacked by predators. So, they will whine and cry to make their mother come back soon from hunting to protect them. They become quiet once their mother comes therefore ensuring their survival.

So, it is natural instinct that drives your puppy to whine and cry once they come to their new home to show that they miss their family. It is quite difficult to get your pup stay quiet and sleep during the night for the first few days or weeks. Their first night at your home can be quite frightening for them and quite challenging for you. This will also set the start of a new relationship with them.

Most people usually shut their puppy in a far away room or the basement or garage for them not to miss their sleep. Or they may put them in a cage that will set them off to whine and howl the whole night till dawn thereby increasing their feeling of insecurity. Sadly, this is a very wrong practice as it will only cause more behavioural problems as your puppy grows.

Where do I put them to sleep?

If you are wondering which is the best place to make your puppy sleep then you should think about putting them in a place where they do not feel lonely. Putting them in your bed is not a bright idea either until they are potty trained.

Use a crate

The best thing for you to do is to put them in a crate in your bedroom or just near the opened door of your bedroom. This way your puppy knows where you are and will feel reassured. Since puppies have poor bladder control they will cry out to you to let you know that they need to relieve themselves.

The best way to set the routine is to take them out after they eat and before they sleep. Taking them for a small walk before they sleep will make them feel tired and are more likely to enjoy a sound sleep and will allow you to sleep peacefully.

Of course, your pup will not be happy about being in a crate and will cry. You just have to ignore their cries and they will slowly settle down. If they wake you sometime during the night you probably have to take them out for a potty break.

Establish a toilet training routine

Apart from taking them out before they sleep they also need to go out first thing in the morning as soon as they wake up. They usually pee a couple of times before they finish their outing. Once they finish you must praise them for their efforts and hand them a small treat as a reward and let him know that they have done a good job.

The basic thing you need to do when you bring home a new puppy is to show them your affection and endless patience. Doing this will ensure that a beautiful relationship is formed between the two of you and will turn them into an obedient, loyal and an affectionate pet.
