When to switch over to adult food?

When your puppy reaches the required adult height is when you need to switch them over to adult food. This usually happens around 9 to 12 months in small breeds, around 12 months in medium sized breeds and around 12 to 24 months in larger breeds.

The transition from puppy food to adult food must happen at the right time as there will be a change in the calorie and nutritional requirement as your puppy slowly steps into the adult phase. Puppy food contains high calories and nutritional supplements and feeding this to your now mature dog can cause them to put on weight leading to obesity and orthopedic issues.

When you are making the change to adult food, do it slowly and it must happen within a week. Here is what you need to do:

• Day 1 – Mix together 75% puppy food and 25% adult food in your dog’s bowl.
• Day 2 – Mix together 50% puppy food and 50% adult food in your dog’s bowl.
• Day 3 – Mix together 25% puppy food and 75% adult food in your dog’s bowl.
• Day 4 – Fill your dog’s bowl fully with adult food.

If your dog does not take to adult food then maybe you could changing the flavour from chicken to mutton or fish. Depending on what taste your dog prefers. But it is always advisable to consult your vet before making the switchover as he may recommend some brands and certain food that would suit your pup’s breed and size.
