CANCER IN SENIOR DOGS
Cancer is a serious condition which is difficult to notice in its primary stage but have lethal effects and increase in severity while growing. Cancer in the last stage leads to death.
Neoplasia means new growth. Growth of new cells that proliferates without control, have no useful function and no orderly arrangement. Neoplasia is referred to as a tumour. Tumors are classified as Benign and Malignant and malignant tumors are commonly called as ‘’CANCERS’’, which means crab.
The shape of cancer cells are irregular, grow rapidly and extends in all directions. Benign tumors remain localized without spreading while malignant tumours are spread rapidly to other parts of the body and cause death.
Tumour is simply a swelling but it does not mean that all swellings are tumour. If you notice any swelling on the body of your dog which persists for a long period of time, immediately contact your vet for further investigation and treatment.
Cancer of the Head and Neck, Skin in older dogs, Bones in large breeds, Breast and Testicles are common in dogs.
Cause of cancer:
- Hereditary
- Age – Generally seen in dogs aged 5 to 6 years. The chances increase when your dog grows older
- Biological causes – The presence of Bacteria, Viral or Parasitic infections
- Physical causes – Continuous exposure of dog to solar radiation, UV light, X-ray or toxic substances.
Cancer is toxic to patient and its removal is often difficult. Surgical operations need to be performed for their successful removal. But even after surgical removal the cancerous cells may grow back. So, regular check ups with the vet, balanced diet and exercise may go a long way in ensuring your pet remains healthy, active and happy.
