Skin disorders in dogs
As like human beings, skin disorders are very common in dogs and cats. A partial or complete loss of hair from the skin is termed as Alopecia in scientific language. It is one of the most commonly seen skin disorder in dogs.
Alopecia may seen in all ages, both sexes and in any breed of dog. The hair growth may be affected by various internal or external factors. Internal factors such as drug reaction, hormonal imbalance, immunological factors and tumour. External factors such as bacterial or fungal infections, continuous exposure to chemicals, UV light and toxic substances could be responsible for loss of hair.
Here are the causes for alopecia in dogs:
- It could be hereditary, where abnormal growth of hair and hair follicles may be passed on from parent to child.
- Lack of nutritional diet or poor nutrition may be the major cause of alopecia.
- Protein deficiency leads to reduced hair growth and poor quality of hair coat.
- Vitamin B complex deficiency leads to dry and rough hair coat and loss of hair.
The Patches of alopecia may be seen on the body. Scaling on the skin can be noticed in some dogs suffering from severe alopecia. To overcome this deplorable condition good managemental practices such as bathing on regular time of interval and balanced nutritional diet should be provided to your dog.
You need to take your pet to the vet for effective treatment. He may prescribe ointments, creams, lotions or shampoos. Oral medications also may be prescribed. You need to ask your vet if you can provide your dog with vitamin or other health supplements can be given to your dog. Early treatment and good care can go a long way in treating this disorder.
