Wow facts about Golden Retrievers
Golden Retrievers, as most are aware of, are an adorable breed that can be easily trained and domesticated. They are so much of charm that their owners are always pleased. And they love a good dip in the water.
Here are some more facts about the cute breed:
- Lord Tweedmouth could well be called the ‘Father of Golden Retrievers’. He bred the first Golden as a cross between the now extinct Tweedwater Spaniel and the yellow Flat Coated Retriever, in Scotland.
- Golden Retrievers weren’t recognised as an official breed until the establishment of the Golden Retriever Club in the United Kingdom in 1913
It took 12 more years – 1925 – for the breed to gain its own identity in the United States, thanks to the American Kennel Club
- Golden Retrievers are considered to be the fourth smartest dog breed – after Border Collies, Poodles, and German Shepherds – in the world
- Former United States’ Presidents Gerald Ford and Ronald Reagan had Golden Retrievers as pets while in office. And Ford’s even littered while he held office
- This special breed of dogs is renowned for its care towards other pets and animals. Cats – check!
- Golden Retrievers are known for being great swimmers and their deep-ingrained love for a cool dive into the waters
- So much so, they were originally bred for hunting and retrieving wildfowl in marshlands and wet outfields
- Charlie, a Golden Retriever from Australia, holds the Guinness World Record for loudest bark at 113.1 decibels. Just to contrast, the loudest scream by a human being – incidentally, a woman – was recorded at 129 decibels. Cue: Maria Sharapova
