EXERCISE YOUR SENIOR DOG

As your dog ages he may become inactive and less energetic. It could be due to weight gain, arthritis or heart problems. Whatever may be the reason, it is your duty as a pet parent to be aware of your dog’s slowed down pace and immobility and to modify his exercise routine to accommodate his bodily changes.

Regularly exercising your senior dog has added health benefits like keeping his joints, ligaments and muscles strong and flexible. It improves blood flow in his body, reduces pain and improves his state of mind.

Here are a few ways that you can exercise your senior dog:

  • Take your dog out for regular walks but make sure that it is short and within a comfortable distance that he can walk to each day.
  • Swimming is another exercise that strengthens his muscles without causing much pressure to his joints. It serves as a excellent therapy for dogs suffering from an injury.
  • Your dog can still play fetch games, frisbee or tug of war. But you need to ensure that he does not exert himself too much and is for a short time to avoid fatigue and strain.
  • While exercising your dog outdoors, especially during summer, make sure he has access to clean drinking water to keep him hydrated. Cover him with warmer clothing and boots when the weather turns cold.
  • Physically engage your dog indoors by providing him with a few treat toys which will disperse food in small portions that will stimulate his physical and mental health. It also helps in reducing weight in dogs suffering from weight related issues.
  • Make your dog to slowly climb up and down the stairs. This will help to strengthen his muscles and joints. If stairs need to be avoided then you can set up a few ramps at home and make him walk on it without causing him any pain.
